InvoiceNow

As Singapore accelerates its journey toward a digital-first economy, the way businesses handle transactions is undergoing a fundamental shift. Gone are the days of manual data entry and PDF attachments. Enter InvoiceNow, the nationwide e-invoicing network designed to make business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) transactions seamless, secure, and automated.

Whether you are a small startup or an established enterprise, understanding InvoiceNow is no longer optional—it is becoming a core part of tax and regulatory compliance.

What is InvoiceNow?

InvoiceNow is a nationwide electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) initiative that allows the direct transmission of invoices in a structured digital format from one finance system to another.

Unlike sending a PDF via email which still requires the recipient to manually type data into their accounting software, InvoiceNow uses the open-standard Peppol network. This allows different accounting systems to “talk” to each other. When you hit “send,” the invoice data appears instantly in your customer’s system as a draft bill, ready for approval.

Why it Matters:
  • Get Paid Faster: Direct transmission reduces administrative delays and disputes, thus increasing likelihood of prompt payment.
  • Higher Accuracy: Eliminates human error from manual data entry.
  • Enhanced Security: Invoices are sent through a secure, encrypted network, reducing the risk of invoice fraud.
  • IRAS-Ready: It is the primary channel for the new GST InvoiceNow Requirement, allowing businesses to transmit invoice data directly to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS).
Who Must Comply and When?

The Singapore government is rolling out the GST InvoiceNow Requirement in phases. This mandate specifically targets GST-registered businesses, requiring them to use InvoiceNow-ready solutions to submit invoice data to IRAS.

The Implementation Timeline:
PhaseEffective DateWho Must Comply
Phase 11 Nov 2025Newly incorporated companies that voluntarily register for GST.
Phase 21 Apr 2026All new voluntary GST registrants, regardless of incorporation date.
Phase 31 Apr 2028All new compulsory GST registrants and existing GST-registered businesses with annual turnover less than $200,000.
Phase 41 Apr 2029Existing GST-registered businesses with annual turnover less than $1 million.
Phase 51 Apr 2030Existing GST-registered businesses with annual turnover less than $4 million.
Full Rollout1 Apr 2031All remaining GST-registered businesses.

Note: Even if you are not yet mandated, the Government has announced that InvoiceNow will soon become the default channel for all government vendors. Early adoption is highly encouraged to avoid the “last-minute rush.”

How to Start with InvoiceNow

Getting started is simpler than it sounds. Most modern accounting software used in Singapore is already equipped to handle InvoiceNow.

Step 1: Check Your Software

Verify if your current accounting or ERP system is an IMDA-accredited InvoiceNow-Ready Solution. Popular providers like Xero, QuickBooks, and ABSS are already on the list. If you use a custom in-house system, you will need to engage an Access Point Provider to connect to the network.

Step 2: Register for a Peppol ID

Once your software is ready, you need to register for a Peppol ID (usually linked to your UEN). This acts like your digital “phone number” on the network. Most software providers allow you to do this directly within their platform with a few clicks via CorpPass.

Step 3: Update Your Customer & Supplier Master Data

To send an e-invoice, you need your customer’s UEN or Peppol ID. You can find your partners on the Singapore Peppol Directory. Update your database so your system knows where to route the digital files.

Step 4: Activate the GST Submission Feature

If you are GST-registered, ensure the “IRAS Submission” feature is toggled ON in your software settings. This ensures that while the invoice goes to your customer, the required tax data is simultaneously and securely transmitted to IRAS.
